SIMONA – Sediment-quality Information, Monitoring and Assessment System to support transnational cooperation for joint Danube Basin water management

The SIMONA project is the Interreg project within the Danube Transnational Programme 2014-2020. The value of the project is 1.749.152,38 €, of which 1.201.583,24 € is co-financed by the ERDF fund, 192.418,75 € by the IPA fund, 92.777,50 € by the ENI fund and 169.133,17 € from the own funds of the project partners. The project started on June 1, 2018 and lasts until May 31, 2021. The project involves 17 partner and 12 associated strategic partner institutions. The leading partner of the project is the Geological Survey of Slovenia.

The project aims to develop standardised and harmonised protocols of sampling, analysis, evaluation and monitoring of the quality of the drainage sediment for the whole area of the Danube basin. Protocols will be based on existing protocols of individual partner countries. The quality of drainage sediment refers to hazardous substances content (HS, inorganic and organic) prescribed by the EU WFD (Water Framework Directive).
Finally, the goal is to create an online application that will contain these protocols and represent an input system for data on the quality of the drainage sediment. In addition, the application will also include the data processing system. The entire project is accompanied by the training of associated strategic partners in charge of the implementation of project results (e.g. Croatian Waters). At the same time, associated strategic partners take an advisory role throughout the project, so that the developed protocols are adapted to their needs, but also improved and harmonised with other partner countries.
The project consists of 7 work packages. HGI participates in all and is the responsible partner for the work package entitled "Sampling and Laboratory Protocol".
